Kindergarten
Dear Parents/Guardians:

Since September, your child and his/her class have been attending physical education daily. Already in that short time we have had together, we have covered a lot of curriculum. There may be times where your child talks to you about what we are doing in phys ed, and I wanted to have an opportunity to tell you more about what we are working on.


Overall, the phys ed curriculum is separated into 5 different broad categories. These include movement, fitness management, safety, personal/social management, and healthy lifestyle practices.


In Kindergarten, your child develops knowledge, skills and attitudes for being active and healthy in these areas:


Movement and Fitness
* playing cooperatively
* basic skills such as running, hopping, and bouncing balls
* participating in physical activities
Safety
* recognizing and following safety rules for physical activities, footwear and playgrounds
* identifying safety symbols and rules for traffic, school buses, poisons and chemicals, stoves, sharp utensils, bathtubs, and waterfronts
* knowing where to go and whom to ask for help in the community

Personal and Social Management
* identifying their own actions, feelings, emotions related to getting along with others
* knowing how to listen carefully, avoid danger, find help;
* recognizing what is safe/healthy and what is unsafe/unhealthy

Healthy Lifestyle Practices
* knowing daily habits for healthy living, such as daily physical activity, teeth brushing and washing, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep
* identifying helpful and harmful substances
* naming the parts of the body
* understanding the right to privacy (e.g. washrooms)

Kindergarten children learn about living an active and healthy lifestyle. They will participate in physical activities for fun and for fitness. Learning age appropriate strategies to stay healthy, look after themselves and recognize unsafe situations. Additionally, your child will learn about following safety rules and getting along with others. Through simple games the children will learn how to play cooperatively with others, developing basic skills such as running, hopping, and bouncing balls. They will recognize safety rules and symbols for physical activities indoors, outdoors, school and home. Furthermore, through classes we discuss where students can go for help in the community. Your child will be able to identify their own actions, feelings, and emotions in order to better relate to others. By the end of kindergarten, the students will be able to identify healthy habits and parts of the body. These include the importance of daily physical activities such as, teeth brushing, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep. Lastly, students will be able to identify helpful and harmful substances that they may come across.

Grade 1

Dear Parents/Guardians:

* participating in physical activities to show basic skills such as running, hopping, and balancing

Fitness
* participating in energetic physical activities for a certain length of time

Safety
* recognizing and following safety rules for various activities and equipment used in different places and weather conditions
* identifying a variety of safety risks such as risks for toys, clothing, roads, fires, and many others
* knowing where to go and whom to ask for help in the community

Personal and Social Management
* getting along with others and dealing with conflict and anger


Healthy Lifestyle Practices
* knowing habits for healthy living, such as daily physical activity, teeth brushing and washing, healthy eating, and getting enough sleep
* identifying safe and unsafe substances


In Grade 1, your child will understand basic movements and positions such as, going forward/backward, quick/slow, and leading/following/chasing. This will in turn increase their endurance. Additionally, we will discuss safety ranging from weather conditions, locations, and associated risks factors. These include risks involved with toys, clothing, roads, and fires. Discussions on safety will include understanding who and where they can go to receive help. By the end of the year, your child will have an understanding of how to get along with others and how to deal with conflict in a civilized manner. In addition, they will know the importance of healthy habits. These include daily physical activity, washing hands, teeth brushing, healthy eating, healthy sleeping, and identifying safe or unsafe substances.

Grade 2

Personal and Social Management
* showing responsibility and respect
* figuring out positive and negative consequences of decisions
* recognizing what causes stress and ways to reduce stress




Healthy Lifestyle Practices
* making good choices for personal health, active living and healthy eating
* knowing about basic changes as children grow and develop, including the ways living things produce their offspring


In Grade 2, your child will understand movements and positions that have to do with balance, dodging, and leading. When they are engage in simple games they will understand the rules, strategies, and importance of playing fairly. Moreover, while participating in these activities the children will build an aptitude for basic skills such as running, hopping, and balancing. This will allow for participating students to improve their skills and fitness. Your child will acquire an understanding of safety rules for engaging in physical activities. Furthermore, understanding what they should do when helping someone who is injured. The students will have an opportunity to determine positive and negative consequences of decisions. We will also be learning about what causes stress, and techniques to reduce it. The children will learn the importance of making good choices for personal health, active living, and healthy eating. I will discuss with the children basic bodily changes as growth and development occur. In addition to how other living things produce their offspring.

Grade 3

Dear Parents/Guardians: 

Since September, your child and his/her class have been attending physical education daily.  Already in that short time we have had together, we have covered a lot of curriculum.  There may be times where your child talks to you about what we are doing in phys ed, and I wanted to have an opportunity to tell you more about what we are working on. 

Overall, the phys ed curriculum is separated into 5 different broad categories. These include movement, fitness management, safety, personal/social management, and healthy lifestyle practices. 

In Grade 3, your child develops knowledge, skills and attitudes for being active and healthy in these areas: 

Movement  
  • understanding movement and position having to do with pushing, pulling, carrying, balancing objects, copying movements, and others  
  • understanding rules and strategies for simple games and activities 
  • playing fairly   
  • participating in physical activities to show basic skills such as throwing, balancing and landing safely 
Fitness 
  • participating in physical activities for improving flexibility, strength, and endurance 
  • understanding the effects of exercise on the heart 
Safety 
  • following safe practices when doing physical activities 
  • knowing safety rules for fire, seat belts, etc.  
  • identifying ways to prevent violence and avoid unsafe situations  
Personal and Social Management  
  • showing consideration and respect for others 
  • following steps for making good decisions and conflict resolution 
Healthy Lifestyle Practices 
  • recognizing good choices for personal health, active living and healthy eating 
  • describing ways to avoid dangerous situations 

Students have the opportunity to learn through play when they participate in gym class. Their education consists of learning the importance of active living, heathy eating, safety and moreSwitching between different movements and games enables them to improve their balance, hand and eye coordination and dexterity. Additionally, we enjoy playing a variety of sports such as volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball, hockey, ringette and track and field. Participating improves endurance, gives students an opportunity to connect with their peers, while learning about safe play. Most importantly children have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through the different games, an ability that will benefit them for years to come.

Grade 4

* knowing safety rules for fire, school buses, water activities, etc.
* identifying common injuries and ways to help an injured person

Personal and Social Management
* making personal goals, getting along with others and ways to deal with stressful situations

Healthy Lifestyle Practices
* making a plan for personal health, daily physical activity and healthy eating


In Grade 4, your child will show an understanding of movement by using basic movement skills along with awareness to space around them. They will understand how to play fairly, follow rules and use strategies for sports, such as soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, floor hockey/ringette, badminton, baseball, and track and field, lead-up games and activities. Your child will participate in physical activities, where they will be required to keep track of personal progress. We will be discussing safety rules for physical activities, fire, school buses, water activities, cycling, and vehicles. They’ll be increasing their knowledge of common injuries and ways to help an injured person. By the end of the year, students will be able to make personal goals, track daily activities and track healthy eating. Furthermore, they will learn strategies to help them get along with others, and deal with stressful situations.

Your child shows understanding of game strategies, game rules and fair play. He or she performs and combines skills such as running, hopping and throwing to improve control in sports, games, rhythmic/gymnastic and other activities.

Fitness
Your child identifies the benefits of exercise and participates in physical activities that focus on target heart rate and improving personal fitness.

Safety
Your child shows understanding of safety guidelines and behaviours in a variety of physical activities including stretching techniques and water-based activities. Your child also learns about safety concerns in the community

Personal and Social Management

Your child learns about developing friendship and positive relationships, appreciating diversity, managing anger and conflict, and setting goals for a group.

Healthy Lifestyle Practices
Your child learns to make healthy decisions related to reproductive health, changes associated with puberty and avoiding substance use and abuse.



In grade 5, your child will show an understanding of game strategies, game rules and how to play fair. They will be able to perform and combine skills such as running, hopping and throwing to improve control in sports. Such as in soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, ringette, badminton, baseball, and track and field. Your child will be able to identify the benefits of exercise; with focus on target heart rate and improving personal fitness. Along with physical activity student will continue to learn safety guidelines, safe behaviors and safety in their community. Your child will learn about developing positive relationships, appreciating diversity, managing anger, conflict resolution and goal setting for a group. I will be discussing with the student substance use, abuse and avoidance. In addition, we’ll be discussing different strategies on making healthy decisions relating to reproductive health and changes associated with puberty.

Your child learns about proper warm-up technique and the effects of exercise on the skeletal system. He or she participates in physical activities to improve and keep track of personal fitness.

Safety
Your child learns the emergency steps for bicycle accidents and safety practices related to participation in physical activity. Your child also learns about basic first aid, getting help and being safe in the home, school and community.

Personal and Social Management
Your child learns ways to make responsible decisions, build positive relationships, manage stress and emotions, develop positive relationships, and develop and revise personal goals and plans.

Healthy Lifestyle Practices
Your child learns to make healthy decisions related to daily physical activity habits, personal hygiene and nutrition.



In grade 6, your child develops movement skills in a variety of physical activities with an increased understanding of game strategies, game rules, fair play and teamwork. We’ll be working on proper warm-up techniques, as well as, discussing the effects of exercise on the skeletal system. We will continue to develop goals through physical activity by improving and tracking personal fitness. Additionally, we will continue to build a foundation in safety by learning basic first aid, getting help and staying safe at home, school, and in the community. Your children will learn the emergency steps for bicycle accidents and safety practices related to participation in physical activity. By the end of the year, student will be able to make responsible decisions, build positive relationships, stress management, developing and revising personal goals. They will have developed positive habits in regards to physical activity, personal hygiene and nutrition.

In Grade 7, your child develops knowledge, skills and attitudes for being active and healthy in these areas: 

Movement  
Your child understands rules, terms and ethics and performs and analyzes movement skills and in a variety of physical activities.  
Fitness 
Your child learns about exercises for muscle development, training and the reasons for warm-up and cool-down activities. He or she participates in physical activities to reach personal fitness goals and keeps track of the results.  
Safety  
Your child participates safely in physical activities and learns about safety related to equipment, facilities that promote inclusion and water activities. Your child also learns about dangerous situations such as school intruders and Internet use and about ways to find help.  
Personal and Social Management 
Dealing with change, making healthy decisions, managing anger and conflict and learning ways to say no are some areas of focus in Grade 7.  
Healthy Lifestyle Practices 
Your child learns to make healthy decisions related to substance use or abuse, developing relationships and responsible sexual behaviour 

In grade 7, your child will understand rules, terms and ethics, in addition to performing and analyzing movement in a variety of activities. Such as sports including soccer, football, volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, ringette, badminton, baseball, and track and field.  They will learn which exercises to do for muscular development and training. As well as, understanding why warm-up and cool-down activities are beneficial. Through class we will expand knowledge on fitness from previous years; he or she will be able to reach personal fitness goals and keeps track of the results.  Safety is an important aspect of physical activities and safety related to equipment. We will also discuss facilities that promote inclusion and water activities.  By the end of the year, your child will know about dangerous situations such as school intruders, internet use and ways to find help.  Areas of focus in Grade 7 are, dealing with change, making healthy decisions, managing anger, conflict resolution and learning ways to say no. Your child will have learned to make healthy decisions relating to substances use, abuse and developing positive relationships.

Your child participates safely in physical activities and learns about safety related to cycling, exercise and other activities. Your child also learns about laws for safe communities, basic first-aid, and how to find community health information.

Personal and Social Management
Setting and reaching goals, appreciating diversity, dealing with grief and anxiety and managing stress are some areas of focus in Grade 8.

Healthy Lifestyle Practices
Your child learns about healthy lifestyle practices for personal hygiene, active living and healthy eating and makes a personal plan for active and healthy living.


In grade 8, your child will understand rules, terms and ethics, in addition to performing and analyzing movement in a variety of activities. Such as in sports including soccer, football,
